The free charging at Tesla Supercharger network ends.

Elon Musk's Tesla announced to end the free Supercharger program for Model S and Model X starting for orders after January 1, 2017. Tesla operates more than 4,600 Superchargers allow over the world. Charging at these stations is free for Model S and Model X owners. The Model 3 does not come with this incredible freebie.

Tesla will give 2017 Model S and Model X owners 400 kWh of free Supercharging credits, good for about 1,000 miles, each year. Beyond that, there will be a small fee to Supercharge which will be charged incrementally and cost less than the price of filling up a comparable gas car said Tesla in the announcement. All Teslas will continue to come standard with the onboard hardware required for Supercharging.

The electric car company will release the details of the program later this year, and while prices may fluctuate over time and vary regionally based on the cost of electricity, the Tesla Supercharger Network will never be a profit center states Tesla.

These changes will not impact current owners or any new Teslas ordered before January 1, 2017, as long as delivery is taken before April 1, 2017.

Tesla will use the revenues through the Superchargers to expand the infrastructure ahead of the Model 3 launch. If you plan to travel a lot of long distances, you should think about ordering a Model S or Model X now to still get the free Supercharger perk. Tesla is the only electric car company that operates a charging network of this scale. An increased density of Superchargers is especially important for the Model 3 with its lower range (215 miles) compared to the Model S and Model X.
