If you want to watch out how the U.S. election goes down today, you can follow an up to the minute guide with data from around the polling places in the United States. That's what VoteCastr does, it looks at polls the same way that the campaigns will.

You can watch the data for free on Slat.com as well as on Vice News and its streaming broadcast.

While VoteCastr is relatively new to some people, it is going to be a main source for consistent updates on election news. Most news stations won't release polling data until tonight, when the polls in the East Coast start to close.

"This is the day with the biggest disconnect between supply and demand in terms of actual news, on the biggest news day of the year," said Sasha Issenberg, a journalist who literally wrote the book on modern campaign data, and is now VoteCastr’s editorial director. "People readily assume that if there’s a big event that’s dominating the news today, [they] should be able to get information about it."

They will meld turnout data with some of the information that we already have to project what the results will be - it is NOT an exit poll.

This is the kind of data that the campaigns use, though it isn't always available to us.

A word of note, however: this isn't going to be completely accurate. There is always going to be a margin of error on any poll. They will not use them to make projections about who will win - just who is winning at any given time.

One thing that people aren't worried about? Something like this deflating how many people actually turn out.

"People are already learning how to consume this kind of pre-result information, and they’ll learn fast," said Julia Turner, Slate’s editor in chief, via email. "People will adapt to the idea that having some idea of how a race seems to be going midstream is not the same as knowing the result. Only the results are the results."
