Apple has been granted a patent for foldable/bendable iPhones.

Apple has been granted a patent for a foldable and/or bendable iPhone. This device will be manufactured from advanced carbon nanotube structures. Patently Apple claims that this patent application was given back in 2014.

It describes the device to have clam shell like design. Evidence that Apple is seriously interested in this foldable iPhone concept since many years is that another solely bendable phone patent was filed back in 2013.

The patent which has been filed in 2014 uses the iPhone moniker specifically instead of the general ‘electronic device’ or other such derivatives. It also has illustrations of the basic iPhone design as well of the new foldable designs.

The documents also shed some light on the materials which may be used in the construction of this future iPhone. The materials mentioned are ceramic, glass, fibre, plastic and aluminium. However nanotubes are mentioned clearly as the main material which will make this design to be possible.

These patents can be taken to be true but certainly do not indicate that the next iPhone sport any such design. Many other Smartphone makers including the leading rival of Apple, Samsung has also expressed interest in this technology.
