Augmented Reality Maps Are Coming To iPhone

Apple Awarded Patent Which Details Augmented Reality Maps For iPhone

Apple has received a new Patent named ‘Augmented Reality Maps.’ This patent gives an immersive navigation feature which will be powered by augmented reality. This feature if ever does reach an iPhone will be incorporated into the Apple Maps app for iOS devices.

The interesting feature will work when the user will point the camera at their surroundings. The results will show directions and points of interest to be shown on the screen. This is a perfect example of Google’s Street View Navigation concept.

The only difference is that live footage will be the substrate. The system will identify the user’s current location and the device direction. After receiving these two inputs it will tilt and will use a simple array of onboard sensors.

This will be overlapping the camera’s virtual view finder with certain points of interests such as bus stands etc. The user is allowed to alter the live video to find directions to a location desired by the user.

A search bar will appear at the bottom of the viewfinder so that the user can search and navigate his point of interest. This new patent isn’t much of a surprise; we knew rumors were coming in already that Apple was taking interest in the AR/VR field.

Nevertheless, the strong competitors of Apple Google and Facebook are more interested in virtual reality. Apple on the other hand is more inclined towards the augmented cousin. The CEO of Apple has shown his interest in the AR market more than we thought this year.

It is also rumored Apple might be using an augmented system for a self-driving software. Traditionally Apple does not make use of patents immediately. So we might not be seeing this implemented very soon. This is just still an idea which could prove to be amazing for drivers.
