Google has announced that they will ban websites that peddle fake news stories from using its platform to get more views, and now Facebook is following suit. The social network announced today that they will have barred a list of fake news websites from using its Facebook Audience Network ads.

“While implied, we have updated the policy to explicitly clarify that this applies to fake news,” a Facebook spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal. “We vigorously enforce our policies and take swift action against sites and apps that are found to be in violation. Our team will continue to closely vet all prospective publishers and monitor existing ones to ensure compliance.”

Facebook has faced criticism for its role in spreading news that is fake, especially during the election season. Many people see the stories and believe that they are real news. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that the idea that Facebook really influenced the election is "crazy" but many employees think differently. In fact, some have organized a "task force" to solve the problem, according to The Verge.

By restricting ads, they are able to combat some of the issues now but it probably won't do too much in the long run for younger generations. The problem was the abundance of news stories that get millions of views. The most popular fake news story of the last year was that the Pope supported Donald Trump.
