Scientist Stephen Hawking has said that the only way we can escape mass extinction is to find another planet - and it looks like we don't have too long to perfect that.

During a speech at Oxford, Hawking said that our history of understanding of the universe can show what we need to do to continue onward, according to the Daily Express.

“We must also continue to go into space for the future of humanity,” he said. “I don’t think we will survive another 1000 years without escaping beyond our fragile planet.”

Of course, he also said that we shouldn't answer aliens if they do come calling, because it could be dangerous.

Hawking isn't the first theoretical physicist who has said that we should leave Earth in order to survive. In fact, it is something that many people have been saying for years.

Hawking himself has said it before. In January during a BBC Reith lecture, he said that the demise of human kind is our own fault.

He also said that, at this point, it is inevitable that some kind of disaster will strike and completely destroy humanity.

"By that time we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race,” he said during the BBC lecture.

Even worse, it is apparent that whatever that disaster is, it could already be brewing.
