Tesla's Solar Roof to be Cheaper than Regular Roof Even without Energy Factor Says Musk

Elon Musk on the brink of taking over the global roofing industry.

The Tesla Solar roof was already very impressive when Tesla and Solar City unveiled the new solar tiles that look like regular shingles end of last month. Tesla's Solar Roof is almost as efficient as putting ugly regular solar cells on a roof. A Tesla Solar Roof is almost indistinguishable from a traditional roof.

Now Elon Musk delivered a big blow to the roofing industry. At the shareholder meeting, where investors approved with a big majority the merger of Tesla and SolarCity, Musk said that solar roof actually cost less than normal roof before you even take the value of electricity into account."

"So the basic proposition would be ‘Would you like a roof that looks better than a normal roof, last twice as long, cost less and by the way generates electricity’ why would you get anything else, " Musk said according to Electrek. The cost calculation includes the labor costs and is without subsidies for solar.

The reason why the Tesla Solar Roof can be cheaper than a regular roof is the traditional roofing supply chain is according to Musk “incredibly inefficient.”

The glass developed by Tesla for the solar roof tiles weigh “a third, a quarter and sometimes even a fifth” of other current concrete and ceramic roof solutions. Musk says that the weight and fragility of the current products, logistic costs and breakage are important parts of the total cost.

If Musk's calculations turn out real, then the roofing industry is going to change dramatically. The lower cost of solar roofs would also dramatically accelerate the deployment.

The first Tesla Solar roofs are planned to be installed in 2017. Find out everything to know about the Tesla Solar Roof.
