  • A Tricky Thanksgiving Recipe for teens with special diets

The experts have weighed in on Thanksgiving dinner for adolescents with special dietary requirements.

A holiday meal can be a stressful affair in itself. Some families get so caught up in preparing meals that there is no time left over for any fun. Especially catering to teens with special needs such as gluten-free or vegan diets is a headache indeed.

What is to be done?

Well, many teens go around slashing calories or they practice portion control. The only problem with some of the measures they take is that entire food groups are left out of the diet equation. That is a surefire method of inviting various food deficiencies in your life.

The cost to the family is monumental. The special diets require constant vigilance and it is on the whole a pain in the neck with all the avoidance of otherwise healthy foods that go with the territory.

One in six parents has said that their teen offspring tried a diet that was vegetarian, gluten-free, vegan or paleo. The dietary changes were not having a salubrious effect on family relations. This was because there were conflicts with family members.

Especially during the holiday season, these special and weird diets cause a lot of friction with the rest of the family members who are following a normal routine dietary regimen.

They have to adjust to the teen’s requirements and this can be very painful and frustrating in the end. When a teenager refuses to eat macaroni and cheese or turkey, everybody looks in his or her direction and gets upset about this lapse in holiday enjoyment.

Such issues as where to dine out, the preparation of diet-friendly food, each family member eating his or her own thing and the expensive special diets all add up to create chaos.

Teens can be persuaded to make their own meals. This simplifies matters. Or such foods among the family meals that are in compliance with their diets can be eaten.

The reasons behind following the diet may have everything to do with health, someone’s suggestion or even environmental consciousness. Taking vitamin and mineral supplements is a must too since any deficiency may develop in the long run.

Half of the parents thought their teen offspring benefited from the diet while less than half believed that it made no difference. A mere 7% said that the diet had a negative influence on their teens’ health.
