Ellen DeGeneres honored and in tears after almost missing out on receiving the Medal of Freedom from President Obama

With limited days left in the White House, President Barack Obama awarded his last turn of Medal of Freedom to the people who had made an impact on the world in their own way. One of those people was our favorite morning show host Ellen DeGeneres.

Ellen has interviewed President Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama at multiple occasions and suffice to say that she is a good friend of theirs. It was about time that she was awarded with the highest civilian honor in the American system.

Ellen almost did not make it into the ceremony. According to People, she forgot her ID and was stopped from entering the White House until she was cleared. She posted a picture on Twitter where she sat on a bench outside the White House.

When she made it in with the other recipients though, she was in for a treat. President Obama had words to say about all the present recipients of the honor.

While talking about Ellen, President Obama said, “It’s easy to forget now, when we’ve come so far, where now marriage is equal under the law, just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages almost 20 years ago. Just how important it was not just for the LGBT community, but for all us to see somebody so full of kindness and light. Somebody we liked so much, somebody who could be our neighbor or our colleague or our sister challenge our own assumptions. Remind us that we have more in common than we realize, push our country in the direction of justice. What an incredible burden it was to bear, to risk your career like that. People don’t do that very often.”

He almost choked up while talking about her.

When Ellen was called forth to receive the medal, she stood alongside President Obama already tearing up and her eyes welled up from the honorary speech given about her before the President could put the medal around her neck.

The speech entailed, “In a career spanning three decades, Ellen DeGeneres has lifted our spirits and brought joy to our lives as a stand-up comic, actor, and television star. In every role she reminds us to be kind to one another and to treat people as each of us wants to be treated. At a pivotal moment, her courage and candor helped change the hearts and minds of millions of Americans, accelerating our nation’s constant drive toward equality and acceptance for all. Again and again, Ellen DeGeneres has shown us that a single individual can make the world a more fun, more open, more loving place so long as we just keep swimming.”

Through the speech, Ellen teared up and was positively choked up as President Obama put the Medal of Freedom around her neck. Other recipients included Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jordan, Bill and Melanie Gates, Tom Hanks, Diana Ross, Robert De Niro and others.
