Martin Scorsese’s Silence First Trailer Released

Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver have the test of their faith in the trailer release of Martin Scorsese’s movie Silence

Martin Scorsese has been holding on to the idea of this one for over two decades now. He had admitted that he knew he had to be a filmmaker to bring this idea to life.

The movie and everything related to it has been hush hush throughout. No one knows when it was made and who was in it but the crack in Scorsese’s shield of protection has finally been taken down as the first trailer for the movie was released.

As the trailer begins, we see a man’s back as he leans against a doorway and looks into the distance. A soft voice narrates, “Our Lord said to them, Go ye into the whole World and preach the Gospel to every living creature.” We then see a mountainous landscape with the ocean in the distance.

In a grey and rocky terrain, a very thin Liam Neeson character Ferrera, dressed in terrible torn clothes and ragged look falls to his knees. We hear Hiaran Rinds character tells Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver that Ferrera is lost to them.

He has been denouncing God in public and surrendered his faith. Adam says that is not possible because Ferrera risked his life to spread the faith all over Japan and Garfield agrees. He adds that their mission is more important than ever and they must go find Ferrera as soon as possible.

They both volunteer to go to Japan as they are blessed by the Cardinal for their journey. They are warned though that the moment that they step foot in that country they are in high danger and we see a Japanese man beckoning them through a narrow alley.

We see Andrew’s missionary dripping wet when he comes and is welcomed in a coastal village where he starts his missionary work where he is received well by many.

However, we see a scene in which some officials raid the village and he cries in a field as an old man is taken away in ropes. Through a view from the cave we see men standing close to crucified men.

We see the tribal lords telling Garfield that the plan of his Glory is the people’s suffering. We see people being drowned.

In a montage, we see Garfield being transported, Driver kneeling with some villagers in prayer, Driver declaring that it is too dangerous to which Garfield reminds him that they asked for this mission.

Both the missionaries are seen in different environments where they’re threatened, seen in agitation and misery and spreading the words of the Gospel despite the challenges. In the last moment we hear Garfield say that he is praying but he is lost, is he praying to silence?

It is an extremely moving and chilling trailer that just gives us a glimpse of what Scorsese has in store for us. The movie is based on the 1966 novel of the same name and the movie is set to release on December 23rd.
