  • Fish Frozen in Japanese Ice Skating Rink Sparks Uproar among Marine Conservationists

Whole shoals of fish frozen in a Japanese skating rink caused a sense of outrage and horror among marine conservationists.

An amusement park in Japan closed its skating rink recently. The reason behind this was that thousands of fish had been frozen into its structure. This was seen as a sort of surreal and cruel joke by many environmentalists and animal rights activists.

The park owners shut down the facility after the online campaign picked up speed regarding its condemnation. It was termed bad, bizarre and a form of torture.

This skating rink was actually supposed to have remained operational till spring time. It contained 5000 dead sprats, mackerel and other forms of fish, according to JapanTimes via TheGuardian. They appeared to remain lifeless in the rink as if in suspended animation with many of them having their jaws open.

These fish were even decorated with signs which seemed to have them say “hello”and dispense directions to the crowds of skaters who visited the amusement park.

There were even manta rays and sharks beneath the ice sheets. Some of these fish were shown in the form of large photographs, as the skating rink owners pointed out to the crowds.

After this skating rink appeared on television, there was a sense of outrage and moral indignation among the Japanese public. The closure of the facility was called for and as the days progressed the protest became more and more vocal and vociferous.

The Facebook page of this amusement park was flooded with complaints and hate mail. One of the commentators said that this showed a lack of respect for life and all life forms.

Another one said it showed low standards of morality. The amusement park had meant to make the skating rink more realistic in the process and allow the visitors to literally feel like they were gliding on the sea. Yet this strategy had apparently backfired.

It had been touted by the owners as the first such experiment of its kind in the world. Of course, it was in bad taste and so it had to go. Mankind has progressed to the extent that we don’t treat animals be they fish or frogs for that matter with such cruelty as was shown by this amusement park.

The owners of the park apologized to the public and said that they were repentant over the fact that they had made such a big blunder. The event has been postponed. It will all be most likely dismantled soon.

There will even be a memorial service for the fish seeing that such great disrespect was shown to a species of life that nourishes humanity and beautifies our oceans.
