  • Why do some People have Spontaneous Erections upon Waking Up in the Morning?

The question is a legitimate one: why do some people actually have spontaneous erections upon waking up in bed in the morning? Apparently, science has a clue or two.

Waking up with an erection is a common experience for many men. Yet what is the reason behind this strange and embarrassing condition? While it can cause going to the washroom an ordeal, it can also help set the tone for the morning hours.

A morning erection can signify one’s sexuality and sexual state. Termed nocturnal penile tumescence, it is an interesting physiological response in the male repertoire.

Also it points the way to sexual functioning and performance. These phenomena have an influence on all males even males in the womb and little boys, according to MailOnline.

This may seem hardly likely but it is a hard fact and the truth. The female of the species has a similar condition known as nocturnal clitoral erection. It seems that bimorphism is built into the very structure and function of Nature whether you spell it with a capital “N” or a small “n”.

The nervous system and endocrine glands combine to make penile erections possible in the first place. The blood vessels of the male intromittent organ are affected by this endogenous cocktail of chemicals.

When a man is sexually aroused, he receives the message loud and clear in the brain. The chemical transmitters go on to send more blood to the vessels of the penis.

The blood in turn is trapped in the penis and it undergoes erection. Hormones such as testosterone play their part too. However, the same action could take place unconsciously. That is through the spinal cord. These erections even occur during REM sleep.

Certain areas of the brain have to be activated. That is all. Several cerebral systems and hormones are included in the mechanism responsible for this phenomenon.

Since we often awake while in REM sleep, the morning erection is a common experience in males. Men can even have as much as five erections during a single night’s sleep.

The quality of the erections of course vary since with age they tend to undergo a drooping effect. The morning erection also seems to go down after the full bladder is emptied in the washroom by the male of the species.
