Just before Thanksgiving, we heard that Best Buy was going to get the Nintendo NES back in stock for Black Friday. Everyone was excited and people started making plans so that they could purchase the must-have item.

Except there was one big problem: there weren’t any consoles when people went to the stores. So what gives?

Our source from the original article says it’s simple, “The stock didn’t come in. We had been planning on getting something that didn’t materialize. The demand is so high that Nintendo can’t keep up. They are doing their best and communicating with corporate consistently, but it is hard. I don't think anyone planned for this level of interest.”

When Will the Nintendo NES Be in Stock at Best Buy?

“We’ve started to be hesitant to tell people when we can expect anything because it is so unpredictable. Sometimes stock we think we will get can actually go to someone else because they have more pull,” the worker said. He actually said that the best way to find out if your local store has a Nintendo NES is to check this website.

How Can I Get a Nintendo NES at Best Buy?

“At this point, you just have to get really lucky. You almost have to be in the store when they are restocked or spend your day refreshing the website. It’s nearly impossible.”

If you can get a “spy on the inside,” you might have more luck. Still, there is a hierarchy within each and every store and most people won’t even know when the game will be restocked.

Are the People Buying the NES to Play or Sell?

“People here are buying it for themselves. I don’t think the problem with in-store difficulty is that people are buying it to sell. I think the problem is that people are capitalizing on the popularity online. They will buy and resell the items, making it almost impossible to get them. Bots and scammers work much more quickly than people will. Since people who would traditionally want to get the console can’t get it, they have to move to stores, which is creating the problem on the ground.”

Your Advice?

“Wait until after Christmas,” the worker says, “people will return it if they get two. People will decide they don’t like the novelty and get money for the newest Apple product.”
