Sometimes we all appreciate a good message on our phones from someone we don't know - whether it is to warn us about an incoming storm or to alert us that a criminal is on the loose. These are short messages that are known as Wireless Emergency Alerts of WEAs for short. They are part of a program put into play thanks to the Warning, Alert, and Response Network (WARN) Act, which Congress passed in 2006. WEAs allow targeted messages to be sent out to every cell phone in a specific region thanks to geographically relevant cell towers. They can target small areas or large sections of the population.

Interestingly enough, there are three different reasons why you may get a WEA:

  • An alert from the President;
  • Alerts involving imminent security or safety threats;
  • Amber Alerts
Some carriers allow you to block out these notifications in some cases. However, the Presidential alert can NEVER be blocked.

Twitter user Chris Lawrence actually brought this to the public's attention:

People are starting to get worried that because Trump doesn't seem to have impulse control, he might send out something that isn't in our best interests. Luckily, the messages are limited to 90 characters and it isn't as simple to send out a WEA as it might be to send out a Tweet.

All WEAs have to be passed through FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert & Warning System, which means that there are going to be some checks on him. Though he probably could pass through the system. Even so, just a few moments of thinking could be enough.

It also stands to point out that Trump doesn't use a computer, so the idea of him learning how to send a message (which takes two courses to use the system) is improbable.
