  • A Single Cigarette per Day could put a Dent in One’s Longevity

Even a single cigarette smoked per day could put a dent in one’s longevity. This action alone amounts to approximately 365 cigarettes per year.

Those smokers who just light an occasional cigarette per day face risks way more than those who don’t go near the cancer stick. Cigarettes have been called coffin nails for a reason.

They are deadly in the long run. There is no such thing as a safe way to smoke cigarettes. Even those who didn’t smoke everyday but very seldom lit a rolled joint managed to sharply increase their risks of an early death, according to a new study pubslihed in JAMA.

Smoking kills. It is a major health hazard and even second-hand smoke from cigarettes could harm one immensely. Cigarettes cause five million deaths each year due to a variety of reasons.

While many heavy smokers cut down on their habit and decrease the number of cigarettes they smoke each day, they ultimately find it difficult to entirely quit the habit.

Thus the risk factor remains extant. To see how light smokers fared in the longevity game, researchers studied 290,000 mature people between the ages of 59 and 82. 22,000 of them were smokers at the time of the study.

156,000 had been smokers in the past. They filled surveys in 2004 and 2005. By the time 2011 came along, those who smoked even one cigarette a day were more likely to have died.

This was compared to those who didn’t smoke to begin with. The latter were still enjoying a healthy and vibrant existence. The light smoker’s faced a 64% increase in chances of mortality as compared to the non-smokers.

Smoking ten cigarettes a day led the chances to increase to 87%. Light smokers often fell prey to lung cancer. This was virtually non-existent in the non-smokers.

The smokers were nine times more likely to die of lung cancer than the non-smokers. Those who smoked ten cigarettes a day had their chances of dying from lung cancer increased to 12 times the normal levels found in society.

The younger your age at which you quit cigarettes, the better you are in the long run, according to Reuters. Therefore, there is no such thing as a little smoking.

Smokers would do well to quit the habit in a cold turkey manner no matter how painful or anxiety-inducing it might be. In this lies their salvation from the evil clutches of such nasty diseases as lung cancer.
