We all know that using counterfeit chargers can severely impact our iPhones - but what many of us didn't realize is that it can also impact our physical health as well. A study recently looked at 400 counterfeit Apple iPhone chargers and found that 99% of the imitation devices failed a basic safety test and could result in an electric shock.

The study  was done by the Canadian division of power safety compliance firm UL and shows that they can be deadly. They purchased the chargers from eight countries, including the US, Canada, Colombia, China, Thailand, and Australia.

They tested the devices and found that there was insufficient insulation which poses a threat of shock to users.

In this particular test, only three of the 400 devices passed the test.  During the test, 22 of the units were immediately damaged when turned on, and 12 could potentially electrocute a person.

It is never a good idea to use a counterfeit iPhone charger as they have been known to start fires and shock people. Make sure that you buy an Apple product - a recent study found that over 90% of the "genuine" chargers are counterfeit.

The researchers explain why you should avoid these: "The internal components are vastly different when compared with a genuine UL Listed Apple adapter. Post testing analysis of the tested samples revealed a complete lack of triple isolation wire used for the secondary windings; neither the primary or secondary windings were separated properly, which is the major reason for the dramatic failure rate on the electric strength test."

Those components are what makes the chargers safe to use. Companies like Apple have to test their devices many, many times before selling. Still, counterfeit chargers don't have to go through that process.

In order to ensure that your charger is the real thing, make sure they are white, Apple-branded, and sold in a box. Even better, only buy from Apple or participating retailers. Remember that most Apple chargers are at least $19, if not more.

It isn't worth your safety to not spend a few more dollars and get what you need.
