It is being said that females who keep a positive and cheerful outlook tend to remain healthy and free of any diseases.

Women who see the glass as half full instead of half empty have the will to live healthy and disease-free lives. This study involved over 70,000 women.

The die-hard optimists among them were least likely to contract such deadly maladies as cancer, cardiac disease, lung ailments and stroke during their last few years.

Some of the links were due to better life choices and behavioral strategies that worked. Yet the single biggest predictor of vibrant health was a positive and pro-active mental attitude.

The power of a happy disposition that took all tragedies in a stride and smiled through the tears cannot be overemphasized in all this.

The fact that this optimism could be learnt over time speaks volumes about the ability to change one’s chances of surviving into a ripe old age without the concomitant degenerative diseases.

To constantly imagine a good future and never let oneself become depressed or downcast was the secret of these female participants. They truly possessed what could only be called the “strength of a woman”.

The study was published in the journal American Journal of Epidemiology.

Such optimism could be the best medicine short of laughter. A large study of career and retired female nurses was carried out. The participants were requested to rate themselves on a scale of positivity from zero to 24.

The healthy among them had ages ranging from 58 to 83. They were monitored over a span of almost a decade. There were a total of 4566 deaths among them, according to BBC.

The higher the optimism, the less were the chances of death in this sample of women. Other factors such as marriage, class bracket and history of disease expression were kept constant.

Thus optimism not only seemed to have a psychological effect, it also had physical ones. The power of positive thinking is such that it lowers inflammation throughout the body.

In order to get the best value out of a cheerful and optimistic outlook one ought to keep one’s standards of health and future goals high. Viaualize how you will look like in five years time and keep the image a positive one.

Also keeping a gratitude journal helps immensely in this. When you are thankful for the small pleasures of life, you generally remain bright and full of energy. Also a log book of the random acts of kindness you engage in helps in this scheme.
