  • Nurturing Premature Babies Kangaroo-Style causes Health Benefits in the Later Years

Apparently, nurturing premature babies kangaroo-style causes health benefits in the later years.

Kangaroo Mother Care has a very real and indelible impact on the premature babies even 20 years down the timeline. Two decades ago, a group of Colombian parents were advised to keep their babies warm and breastfeed them mother’s milk as well as allow them skin-to-skin contact.

As young adults, those selfsame premature babies tend to not only survive but thrive. As young adults, these babies are less likely to show any aggression, impulsive behavior or hyperactivity. This was so when they were compared to premature babies who were left in an incubator instead.

The babies that received Kangaroo Mother Care tend to survive longer, have well-knit families and even have larger-sized brains. The study was published in the journal Pediatrics.

Thus the most fragile of preemie babies ended up as tough, virile human beings 20 years down the line thanks to Kangaroo Mother Care. As children, these preemie babies showed lesser school absenteeism, expressed their feelings very well and showed little or no anti-social behavior.

A preemie is born once every two seconds around the world. Kangaroo Mother Care is of the essence for such babies which are vulnerable to begin with.

The babies subjected to Kangaroo Mother Care also tend to be healthier and wealthier when they grow up. According to WHO, 15 million premature babies are born each year.

Premature birth is also a leading cause of death among babies. One million deaths of preemies took place a year ago. As for the survivors, they face complications such as disability and visual and hearing issues.

These babies require extra care since they are very delicate and fragile. Hypothermia and infectious illnesses often cause them to die.

In Third World countries, these babies tend to face a tough time since incubators are scarcely available. With Kangaroo Mother Care, the mother becomes the child’s incubator.

Also she is its main source for nutrition and stimulation. The baby is held in a kangaroo-like manner near the bosom of the mother. Also breastfeeding occurs while it is in this position.

Both mother and baby are discharged earlier to go home and relax in a domestic environment. The family builds a web of trust and care surrounding the preemie baby.

Such methods have healing wisdom and the age-old traditions of the past behind them. They show that a little bit of early maternal love goes a long way. In short, Kangaroo Mother Care can make all the difference in the world for preemies.
