Several NASA experts warned that earthlings are unprepared for an Armageddon-like scenario. Were a massive asteroid or comet to strike the planet, human beings would not be prepared to deal with the whole scale destruction that would ensue.

The whole thing brings nightmarish visions in its wake. A big asteroid or comet heading towards earth would leave humankind knowing not what to do and entirely at its mercy.

The movie “Armageddon” is a prime example of this happening in the future. We humans are not prepared for the consequences which might mean the complete extinction of 99% of the species on earth by this comet.

The biggest issue is that there is not much we can do about this event if it does occur anytime in the future. Were such a comet to make a beeline for the earth, ultimate devastation and destruction would be the order of the day.

Civilization as we know it would be a thing of the past. The only things to survive would probably be grass and insects. While such catastrophes are a rarity in earth’s history, they are not something that doesn’t happen at all. There is always the chance of a huge boulder hurtling towards the earth. You never know.

The asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs and made way for the mammals is a prime example. Such cataclysmic events occur in cycles that are 50 to 60 million years apart, according to CBSNews.

Although we could be subject to such an onslaught of a stray rock from outer space, it is a random occurrence that is based upon the law of chance.

We have already had a close encounter in 1996 when a comet came close to Jupiter. Another similar impact occurred this year too. Mars too had a close call in 2014. Such events tend to raise humanity’s hackles. They evoke our most visceral fears and anxiety.

Right now, the state of our technology is such that we are ill-prepared for such an event. An interceptor rocket is one thing which could be of great help in this regard.

Such activities would however require funds from the government. NASA has already set up an office meant to track Near Earth Objects in the vicinity.

About 90% of these are no larger than a kilometer in size. We have to remain aware regarding any such occurrences since our very existence may be at stake here. Any defense measures will be something we work towards in the future. Yet work should begin on it today.
