  • The UK Becomes First Country that allows the Genetic Possibility of Three Parent Offspring

The UK is the first nation on earth which has allowed the genetic possibility of three parent offspring.

Britain has legalized three parent babies. This involves the usage of healthy DNA from a donor in order to overcome genetic complications. The scenario represents a picture of a Brave New World.

The UK fertility clinic termed HFEA has approved the sparse use of the biotechnology. The technique is one that was developed by British scientists in order to substitute the defective DNA in the mitochondria of the egg.

Healthy mitochondrial DNA is used as a replacement. This comes from a female donor and it corrects any defects in the original DNA. Thus all and any genetic defects that may arise in the embryo are erased at one stroke.

These babies would have three parents, that is two mothers and one father. This raises issues of ethics since there could be family complications and legal conundrums down the line.

The technology has been approved only for special cases where it is desperately required by all the parties concerned. After every other option has been thrown into the rubbish bin, only then will this alternative apply and that too only in the UK.

This is a life-transforming turn of events. The technique holds the future of the family in its hands. Those parents who do not want their children to fall prey to various diseases later on due to faulty mitochondrial DNA will be given the means to have normal and healthy offspring.

The technique thus comes as a boon and a blessing. Fertility clinics can also apply for licenses to practice this procedure. By the time 2017 arrives, this could be standard procedure in fertility clinics although it will be rarely employed.

The first three parent babies will get born next year. It is something the parents who are on the waiting list are looking forward to with eager anticipation.

Newcastle University is one such institute that has already applied for a license. It was also responsible for manufacturing and honing the technique to perfection.

Women with healthy eggs are being sought too. Upto 25 selectively chosen patients will be treated next year in accordance with the protocol which applies in this process.

A lengthy monitoring will also take place of any children born this way. This is to ensure that the offspring do not have any defects in them.

While Britain is the first country to legalize this procedure, the world’s first three parent baby was born in Mexico. Not everyone is enthusiastic about this novel technique. It will open up a Pandora’s Box, say many who fear that it will have serious repercussions.
