It was most probably a means of gaining access to Donald Trump via the President-Elect’s immediate family. The auction had been running for 10 days straight and had drawn 28 bids. The highest bidder had parted with $72,888.
Among the bidders was a trio of businessmen who said that it was an ideal way of having a formal coffee with Ivanka Trump. This was supposed to influence Donald Trump so that he could bestow favors on these bidders.
All the information on the names of, and amounts donated by, the bidders were apparently cancelled from cyberspace on Friday, according to NYTimes. The winning party would have most probably been an organization called Go Hydrogen. Yet this information could not be found on the Internet.
The Trump spokespersons have said that the entire family has decided to wait before allowing this bidding to go on unimpeded. The money from the bidding was supposed to go to the Eric Trump Foundation. This belongs to Ms. Trump’s younger brother.
Ultimately, the money was supposed to help aid the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. A statement from the family said that they wanted to handle the whole thing with proper etiquette since some loopholes were brought to their notice.
Eric Trump has expressed his sorrow upon seeing the charity drive fizzle out. He said that the little ones of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital lost a helping hand due to this cancellation.
There were questions raised regarding why Eric Trump had not given the money to the hospital himself. It would not have been a difficult thing seeing that he had a lot of cash on his hands.
Furthermore, since Ivanka was pivotal in handling her father Donald Trump’s image during the campaign, access to her could lead to influencing the President-Elect.
Such a bid for charity had never been allowed in the Bush or Obama Administration. It should thus not be allowed during Trump’s reign either.
