The box office predictions for the Star Wars standalone movie Rogue One are going up to over $140 million

Rogue One is almost upon us. The film has already showcased a Thursday preview, hauling in an estimated $29 million. The movie will be released on the U.S. box office and the rest of the world on Friday evening and like Star Wars VIII: The Force Awaken, Rogue One stands a chance to earn big.

Last year, The Force Awakens was released at the exact same date. Only it was the first Star Wars movies after a long time, it was related to the franchise and it also featured the original cast and characters including Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca etc. The movie opened to $247 million dollar in just its opening weekend with a record Thursday preview earning $59 million.

The Rogue One project is Lucasfilm and Disney’s first standalone project in the film franchise which takes place in the timeline between the third and fourth episode.

The movie features completely different characters from the other movies except for Darth Vader perhaps. Felicity Jones plays ErsoJyn, a rebel who is joined by other rogue agents to form an alliance to steal the plans for the Death Star.  The star cast includes; Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikkelsen, Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk and Forest Whitaker.

The movie has been advertised and marketed extensively by Disney and Lucasfilm but they were still not sure whether the project would have the same audience response that The Force Awakens had.

The critics and the audience gave the movie raving reviews with a Cinemascore A and the movie is expected to have a big turnout over the opening weekend with most of its expected dynamic to be male viewers. The experts are predicting that the movie is expected to earn over $140 million, according to Variety.

Some are saying that it will go up to $150 million while other predict that it will earn up to $160 million. If so, the movie will become the biggest opening weekend this year and the second biggest December box office release after The Force Awakens.
