Rogue One earns big at domestic and international box offices making it one of the year’s top film releases.

Lucas Film and Disney tried hard to down the expectations for Rogue One – A Star Wars Story. It was the first ever standalone movie which was not involved with the Skywalker storyline, it had different cast and characters and the story depicted in the movie takes place just before the first Star Wars movie; A New Hopewhich was released in 1977.

However, over the previous few months, the movie has collected a good repute amongst the critics and fans and the reviews for the movie were also great. Going into the weekend, many predicted that the movie will earn up to $140 million on its opening weekend.

The movie started early previews on Thursday night, which collected a record $29 million. The movie was then played across in 4,157 theaters all over the U.S. for three days and became the 15th highest grossing movie in 2016 within it’s opening release by earning an estimated $155 million.

The U.S. box office was not the only one that saw the movie flourish within the three days opening. The global box office except for China and South Korea also contributed in the movie’s earnings with a further $135.5 million which adds up its total haul to an estimated $290 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.

The movie is the second-best December opening just after its predecessor, Star Wars: The Force Awakens which earned $247.9 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. alone.

Disney’s Dave Hollis called the movie a massive opening and the second-best by a wide margin. He said that it sets the studio up in a perfect way for the lucrative holiday period ahead.”

He added that the project is a litmus test for what these stand-alone movies can be, both from a story perspective and a commercial perspective. As we know that there is also a prequel movie based on Han Solo before he met Luke and Leia in the works. Alden Ehrenreich is set to play a younger Han Solo.
