Tesla 8.1 Update Enables Summon, Autosteer at 80 MPH and More Features
  • The highly anticipated Tesla 8.1 update is here!

Elon Musk released the new update which comes with a new version of Autopilot 2.0 and high speed Autosteer

Tesla has always been dedicated to bringing its customers the latest advancements in semi-autonomous driving. Since 2016 Tesla has been teasing about a new update ever since it built an advanced sensor-suite in its Model S and Model X. Rumor has it although Tesla had already built the hardware to go along with the autopilot the engineers took extra months to release the companion software for Tesla cars.

Many who bought the 2016 Tesla models may have believed they bought vehicles with fewer features than older models. However the release of the new Tesla Software 8.1 is changing all that and the Tesla cars with the HW2 suite will soon be gaining several updated features.

Just last week Elon Musk had stated Tesla would roll out the 8.1 update on March 28th to 29th and true to his word it is here. The highly anticipated update 8.1 (17.11.3) for Tesla owners comes with major changes. The biggest draw of the new update is the Autopilot 2.0 hardware.

Autosteer
Additionally the speed limit of the Autosteer has been increased to 80 mph (128 km/h) previously from 55 mph. however Tesla also warned the cameras on their cars will need to be calibrated before working on the increased speed greater than 55 mph. The automatic calibration will take place over the next several days on Tesla cars.

Summon
Moreover the Summon feature which until now was only available in the first generation Autopilot of Tesla cars is being released as a “beta” feature. The Summon feature allowed Tesla cars to move itself in and out of parking spaces without any passengers. The Summon will be featured under the new hardware suite ‘Tesla Vision’ which is Tesla’s own image processing system.

Auto Lane Change

Another part of the 8.1 update is the ‘Auto Lane Change’. Auto Lane Change is a main feature of the Autopilot 1.0 and is being released again to allow drivers to change lanes. The lanes can be easily changed by just using the turn signal when Autosteer is triggered.

Other updates which were expected to be a part of the 8.1 update have so far been absent. For instance the Linux kernel update and the new browser are absent but it may be too soon to roll them out.

Easter Egg
As was expected Tesla hid a special Easter Egg in the new 8.1 update. The owners of Tesla cars quickly found the easter egg is an interactive sketch pad. The Easter egg can be found by tapping on the Tesla logo which is located at the top of the center screen, three times. The tapping unlocks the sketch pad.

The new easter egg by Tesla is different than previous ones which included making rainbows out of the charge port, turning roads into Mario Kart-style rainbows, a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy themed Autopilot software, a Space Balls Easter Egg and a control panel showing James Bond’sUnderwater Lotus.

UI Changes
Some of the UI changes released as part of the 8.1 update include changes in the Media App, Maps App and the voice commands in Maps. For instance, in the media app the update has added new radio stations based on the ‘Favorites’ playlist of the driver. According to Tesla their vehicle owners can now stream their favorite songs and songs inspired by their favorites list. The software will take note after the driver rates a song with a thumbs-up to tune listening preferences.

Maps App Aditional Features<
Similarly in the Maps app, Tesla has added additional features such as Google ratings and opening timings of various businesses. Not only will Tesla owners be able to look up their nearest coffee shops, health clubs etc. but they will be able to inquire about their working hours.
