  • Spacewalking Record broken by Peggy Whitson as Adaptor for Commercial Crew Vehicles is Installed

It seems that such a complex thing as spacewalking has had its record broken by Peggy Whitson. Also the new adaptor has been installed for the commercial crew vehicles.

Shane Kimbrough and Peggy Whitson of NASA completed their spacewalk recently. The foray lasted seven hours in duration. The two astronauts hooked up cables and electrical connections on the PMA-3.

This vehicle will provide the interface between the ISS and the second docking adapter which has been sent into space for this express purpose.

Future dockings will thus take place in a smooth and plain sailing manner. The two astronauts were also given the duty of attaching four thermal security shields on the Tranquility Module of the ISS.

These shields were meant to block the portal where the PMA-3 was detached earlier. They were meant to be affixed with the help of robots onto the Harmony Module.

During the course of the spacewalk, one of the shield’s was lost due to accidental circumstances. However, this loss didn’t pose any dangers for the astronauts who simply proceeded to install the remnant shields onto the mechanism portal.

A team oversaw the operations performed by the astronauts during the spacewalk they participated in. To give the project its finishing touches, a different shield was installed around the base of the PMA-3 adapter.

This was basically meant to protect the vehicle from small-sized meteors. This shield earned the monicker of “cummerbund” since it fit onto the PMA-3 adapter in such a position.

Peggy Whitson has just finished her eighth spacewalk. She holds the world record for the greatest number of spacewalks engaged in by a female, according to NASA.

The previous record was held by Suni Williams who accumulated 50 hours and 40 minutes of spacewalking time. Yet now Peggy seems to have broken that limit by accumulating a total of 53 hours and 22 minutes.
