Beyond the iPhone 8: What's Next for Apple?

Apple is working on its own graphics chip

Much of the world is currently focused on the iPhone 8, but if you are wondering what Apple has in store past the iPhone 8 there is some information out there. The biggest bit of information about what the iPhone might be like past the iPhone 8 comes from the company that produces the PowerVR graphics chip for the iPhone and iPad- Imagination Technologies.

Imagination Technologies is currently very dependent on Apple for its profits with Apple said to account for about half the company's revenue. In fact Apple went into negotiations with Imagination Technologies in the past about an acquisition that Apple ended up declining to make. However, Apple does own over 8% of Imagination.

Imagination has announced that in less than two years Apple has stated that it will be no longer licensing Imagination tech for the iPhone and iPad. This has led to speculation that Apple has its own graphics chip in the works. Imagination Technologies says that it believes that Apple would have a very hard time building a graphics chip from scratch that didn't infringe on intellectual property held by Imagination.

Imagination went so far as to ask Apple to prove that it had a graphics chip in the works that wouldn't infringe on Imagination IP and Apple declined to provide that proof reports The Verge. Imagination says Apple is, "working on a separate, independent graphics design in order to control its products and will be reducing its future reliance on Imagination’s technology."

The statement also read, "Apple has not presented any evidence to substantiate its assertion that it will no longer require Imagination’s technology, without violating Imagination’s patents, intellectual property and confidential information. This evidence has been requested by Imagination but Apple has declined to provide it.

Further, Imagination believes that it would be extremely challenging to design a brand new GPU architecture from basics without infringing its intellectual property rights, accordingly Imagination does not accept Apple’s assertions."

What this means is that Imagination will be putting Apple's allegedly new GPU under the microscope to ensure it doesn't infringe on its patents. This also means that if Apple is really building its own GPU that the new graphics chip must be vastly different from what is on the market today. Imagination hasn't given up on working with Apple moving forward, the company says that it is working on "potential alternative commercial arrangements" with Apple.
