Apple Inc. is churning outs its very own graphic chips for the iPhones and iPads of the future.

Apple is one of the few mobile phone makers that uses its own processors. Yet now it seems that the company is ready to engage in some one upmanship and design the graphic chips on its own facilities.

Apple is keeping mum about the whole deal, but its partner in business, Imagination Technologies, has divulged that Apple will cease to employ its copyrights for GPU chips within the next one to two years time frame. That is because it wants to utilize its own brand of alternative GPUs.

Apple has a graphic design in the pipeline. Work on this has been taking place since a long time. Apple will be becoming self-reliant in the future. It especially wants to get rid of its dependence upon Imagination Technologies.

“Apple has used Imagination’s technology and intellectual property for many years. It has formed the basis of Graphics Processor Units (“GPUs”) in Apple’s phones, tablets, iPods, TVs and watches. Apple has asserted that it has been working on a separate, independent graphics design in order to control its products and will be reducing its future reliance on Imagination’s technology,” Imagination said in a statement.

A custom GPU is something which has made the iPhone aficionados quite eager beavers for the whole deal. Yet it is a big letdown for the big British technology firm. It too had become increasingly reliant on Apple for a major portion of its revenue. After this announcement was made by Apple, Imagination Technologies had its shares fall by 69%.

Apple has thrown the gauntlet and said that it wants to buy off Imagination Technologies. It currently has an 8% share in the tech firm. However, no deal has been reached since the offer was made that supposedly couldn’t be refused.

So Apple decided to get the services of a couple of engineers who would help it get the project in motion. Apple normally does not let on too much regarding its personal plans for the times to come. Imagination Technologies now wants to get into a patent copyright battle in the court of law.

According to TechCrunch, a spokesperson of Imagination Technologies has said that it would be next to impossible for Apple to build a GPU of its own without copyright infringement of what essentially belongs to Imagination Technologies. Alternatives to a face-off in court are being looked to by both conglomerates.
