Apple Is Manufacturing In-House GPU for iPhone and iPad- Here Are The Details

Imagine Technologies’ most popular triumph has been the PowerVR Furian architecture, which revolutionized the graphic performance of smartphones. Not just any smartphone, iPhone and iPad were also among the list of device whose graphics were powered by Imagine Technologies’ GPUs. But iPhone and iPad aren’t among the list any more.

Imagination Technologies revealed to the public that Apple and Imagination’s business association has now ended. Some of the statements during Imagination’s announcement hinted that Apple may has decided to use an Apple-made GPU for future iPhones and iPads. If we scan history, Apple has made no compromises when it comes to graphic performance of its smartphones.

Apple used Samsung’s generic ARM chip along with Imagination’s PowerVR graphics chip to fuel iPhone’s graphic. Since Apple initiated its A-series SoCs for iPhone and iPads, the GPU chip among the A10 Fusion’s set was the only silicon article that wasn’t Apple made. But now it seems that the next iteration to the A-series will be entirely Apple-made.

Apple has a long history of control and a famous habit of not developing love with chip manufacturers. Example is the time when Apple broke business association with PowerPC chipsets manufacturers when Intel’s processors’ speed overtook the speed of PowerPC’s processors. The same situation might have been going on here. We know that iPhone 7 and iPhone 6S both hold the same PowerVR GT7600 graphics chip. According to reports, the GPU was starting to lay-off some of the work to avoid being overheated.

Imagination Technologies lost 67% of its share after the news of Apple’s move surfaced in front of the public. The loss is absolutely devastating. So much that Imagination is looking to take the matter to court. Also, Imagination will have some advantage at this point as Imagination Technologies holds a lot of patents that involve usage of latest architectural schemes for GPUs.
