2017 iMac Could be Delayed to 2018 because of Intel's Cannon Lake

New rumor report says that the next iMac slips to 2018 release.

A new rumor surfaced today, putting the next iMac into 2018 because of Intel's chip release schedule. The last time Apple updated the iMac was in 2015. Apple was expected to release a new iMac in 2017 as early as the WWDC 2017 in June. There is no hard evidence that a new iMac is coming, but the anticipation grows.

Now AppleInsider reports that the iMac is likely delayed and could slip into 2018. The reason for it is a potential delay in Intel's 10nm CPU development, according to an Intel executive speaking to PC World. The Intel Cannon Lake chips support LPDDR4 memory, which allows to support up to 32GB of memory. Why AppleInsider believes that the next iMac is dependent on the unreleased Intel Cannon Lake is unclear.

The rumor mill said though so far that Apple would adopt the new Intel Kaby Lake chips. As the last update to the iMac is 2 years ago, Kaby Lake would already be a reasonable chip upgrade.

Intel promises big things for the 10nm technology in the Cannon Lake CPU line. The Silicon Valley based chipmaker says that their 10nm technology isa full generation more advanced.

"Intel’s 10 nm process utilizes third-generation FinFET technology and is estimated to be a full generation ahead of other “10 nm” technologies. The use of hyper scaling on Intel’s 10 nm technology extracts the full value of multi-patterning schemes and allows Intel to continue the benefits of Moore’s Law economics by delivering transistors that are smaller and have lower cost-per-transistor. Intel’s 10nm process technology will be used to fabricate the full range of Intel products serving the client, server and other market segments," according to an Intel fact sheet released earlier this year.

Intel’s 10 nm process delivers up to 25 percent better performance and 45 percent lower power than the previous 14 nm technology. A new, enhanced version of the 10 nm process, called 10++, boosts the performance an additional 15 percent while reducing power by another 30 percent.

Intel Cannon Lake 10nm

An iMac running on Intel Cannon Lake would be incredible, but there is no evidence that Apple will adopt this future Intel CPU line anytime soon.

Apple has been under fire for neglecting the desktop for a while now. A delay would not be very helpful in smoothing thing over with the professional user community. Microsoft used Apple's moment of weakness in a perfect way. The Surface Studio makes the iMac look like ancient technology. Microsoft in a way is helping Apple iMac fans to get a new iMac sooner than later. The new 2017 iMac needs to be innovative in design and functionality to match Microsoft's stunning device.

Find below what has been rumored so far about the 2017 iMac, which could become a 2018 iMac.

2017 iMac Features

We can take some pointers from the new MacBook Pro that Apple release end of 2016. Apple might introduce the Touch Bar in the 2017 iMac. Apple has patented the integration of the OLED touch screen on standalone keyboards.

LG already said in 2015 that Apple is coming out with an iMac featuring an Retina 8K display. This of course did not happen. One thing that Apple is fond of is though resolution. An iMac Retina 8K is technically possible. The 8K resolution would also allow Apple to give the iMac a bigger screen option. How does a 34" iMac with 8K Display, Core i7 sound?

The new iMac will adopt USB-C like the MacBook Pro. This change requires to get new adapters for your peripherals and has already caused a ruckus at the launch of the 2016 MacBook Pro.

The are some rumors floating around that Apple would adopt the new AMD CPU Ryzon, replacing Intel. This is not very likely, but possible as Apple uses AMD GPUs in the iMac. Intel started to ship the new 7th Generation (Kaby Lake) Intel Core i7 (i7-7700) Processors. The new iMac might adopt the new top of the line Intel Desktop CPUs.

I would not mind going back to the thick design of the iMac in order to get the most powerful CPUs and GPUs on the market. I don't see the thinness of the iMac when I sit in front of it. The problem is that Apple is obsessed with making things thin.

3D is exploding in a big way on Windows 10 this spring. Virtual Reality is driving 3D creation, but Apple has so far no solution for this new big trend. The next iMac ideally would have powerful graphics to drive a virtual reality headset. Right now creative companies have to get a Windows Gaming PC to use an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.

Apple is rumored to work on an augmented reality solution. That is though likely only for the iPhone.

2017 iMac Release Date

At this point it is just guessing. April is a possibility for Apple's first event in 2017. Another option is the WWDC 2017, kicking off on June 5. The WWDC kicks off with a keynote that usually brings new Apple hardware. The new iMac requires a media event. WWDC 2017 is the perfect stage for a new iMac reveal.

Apple unveiled a bunch of new products including a new iPad and iPhone SE on March 21. The red iPhone Plus and the new iPad went on sale on March 24.

2017 iMac Price

The Microsoft Surface Studio is $800 more expensive in the top configuration than any iMac currently available. The new iMac prices could match Microsoft's prices for the top configuration. The lower end iMac models will likely be priced the same or drop slightly. The 2015 iMac starts at $1,099. The most expensive iMac configurable on apple.com has a price of $3,999. iMac deals are available on amazon.com.

Should I Wait to Buy a new iMac?

We recommend holding off the purchase of a new iMac until at least WWDC 2017. If Apple is not releasing the 2017 iMac in June, the release will be in the Fall. Apple will not launch the new iMac during the summer. Registration for the WWDC 2017 tickets opens Monday, March 27 at 10:00 a.m. PDT. The opportunity to buy tickets to WWDC17 will be offered by random selection. To register, you must be a member of the Apple Developer Program or Apple Developer Enterprise Program.

What is the iMac?

In Apple's words: "The idea behind iMac has never wavered: to craft the ultimate desktop experience. The best display, paired with high-performance processors, graphics, and storage — all within an incredibly thin, seamless enclosure. And that commitment continues with the all-new 21.5‑inch iMac with Retina 4K display. Like the revolutionary 27‑inch 5K model, it delivers such spectacular image quality that everything else around you seems to disappear. Adding up to the most immersive iMac experience yet — and another big, beautiful step forward."

The iMac is the perfect desktop machine, but it is time for new power, new design, and bigger and better screen.
