Microsoft Surface Pro 5 Rumors Tip Kaby Lake CPU

Surface Pro 5 update is expected to be a mild one

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablets have proven to be very popular with buyers of all sorts. A new rumor has surfaced with some of the first details of what we can expect to come from the Microsoft Surface 5 tablet. The new rumors claim that the Surface Pro 5 will have the same proprietary surface power connector that is common on tablets today.

Surface Pro 5 is tipped to move to the more power efficient Intel Kaby Lake processors. If you're hoping for a massive change to the tablet, word is that there is nothign too big in store for the update. The tablet is expected to be a mild refresh with new components. Microsoft has previously decreed that Surface Pro 3 power adapters, docks, and Type Covers would work with Surface Pro 4 tablets and we would assume that the Surface Pro 5 will continue this trend.

Keeping that Surface power adapter doesn't mean that there will be no USB-C port on the new Surface Pro 5. With most competitors including at least one USB-C on their high-end devices, Microsoft is expected to follow suit. It's unclear exactly how long we will have to wait to hear something official on the Surface Pro 5 tablets. Microsoft is expected to have a Surface event in the coming weeks. Presumably the Surface Pro 5 will be unveiled at this event.

Previous reports have claimed that there will be no Surface Book 2 at the event, this is the high-end laptop that Microsoft sells to fight the MacBook Pro. Some speculation suggests that the event might include the unveiling of the long anticipated Surface Phone.

Recently we talked about some rumors of that Surface Phone, including Quad HD resolution. Microsoft has an official domain for the devices as well. Surface Phone specs are expected to include a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 835 SoC, 128GB of storage, and 4GB of RAM. A memory card slot is expected to expand storage as needed. The rumor does suggest that an Intel chip might be used instead of that Snapdragon part.

Some other Microsoft Surface Pro 5 rumors are now making the rounds according to Latin Post. One of the rumors claims that the Keyboard Cover for the Surface Pro 5 will be changed in some form. We have no idea exactly what those changes might include, the keyboard cover has been well received and the biggest complaint about it is that you have to buy it separately.

Microsoft is also said to introduce a rechargeable Surface pen and dock. The stylus will be a thin and rod shaped device that will slide into a magnetic dock on the tablet to recharge automatically. No new ports are expected on the Surface Pro 5 according to the latest rumor. Microsoft is expected to continue on with the Surface Connect power connector rather than moving to the USB-C port for charging.

Recent rumors also suggest that the Surface Pro 5 tablet will start at $899 and might launch this October. The big focus on this Pro 5 update is expected to be integrated with software-based innovations and Microsoft cloud services rather than new hardware features and big design changes.
