You may have heard or read about April’s Pink Moon, but what exactly is it and is it really different from other moons?

Pink Moon refers to the full moon that occurs in the month of April. It has nothing to do with the moon’s actual color.

April’s full moon is the first full moon of spring in Northern Hemisphere and is named after pink flowers called wild ground phlox, which bloom in early spring and appear U.S. and Canada almost the same time as the moon. April’s Pink Moon is also called the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and the Fish Moon.

The practice of naming full moons was started by native American tribes. Native Americans gave different names to full moons to track the time or season throughout the year. Other parts of the world have also given distinct names to each month’s full moon.

April’s full moon also determines the dates of festivals around the globe. The date of Easter is connected with new moon. Pink Moon also marks the beginning of Jewish Passover and Hanuman festival in India.

This year’s Pink Moon will rise on Tuesday April 11. The moon will reach its fullest peak at 2:08 on Tuesday morning in East Coast. For the skywatchers on West Coast, the moon will be at its peak at 11:08 on Monday (April 10). However, the event will last till April 12.

This month’s full moon is special for another reason. The moon will rise in tandem with Jupiter which is now positioned directly opposite the sun from Earth. The phenomenon called opposition occurs when earth sits right between the Sun and the planet.

Opposition also marks a Jupiter’s closest approach to Earth in a year. This means that the planet will appear brighter these days than at any other time in the year.
