Nintendo dropped a big bomb, announcing the end of the Nintendo NES Classic production.

Why is the NES Classic suddenly worth $220 more, topping what consumers have to pay for a brand new Nintendo Switch? Nintendo announced to discontinue the NES Classic Edition on Thursday. The company issued a statement declaring the end of production of the Nintendo NES Classic.

The end of the NES Classic has been rumored before, but this is not a rumor. It is official. In the statement received by IGN, Nintendo argues that the NES Classic Edition wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product. Nintendo has extended the production plans frame due to high demand. The discontinuation of the NES Classic can only have monetary reasons. The margin on the $59.99 NES Classic apparently are really slim.

Because Nintendo has no way of up-selling with game cartridges, there is no way for the company to generate sustainable revenue from the NES Classic. As reported, Nintendo could release a Nintendo Super NES Classic this fall to repeat the NES Classic phenomenon.

Nintendo has only explicitly announced to discontinue the NES Classic for North America. The company did not make say if the NES is discontinued globally. We do though assume that this is going to happen.

The good news is that Nintendo said that there will be still new NES Classic stock arriving throughout April. There is still a chance for consumers to find a NES Classic for $59.99. The scalpers will though be now even more aggressive knowing that the NES Classic will be discontinued. The reseller prices of the NES Classic are prone to climb even further.

The $59.99 Nintendo NES Classic Edition console launched on November 11 in stores and online. The supply was extremely constraint in stores and especially online.

The palm-sized NES console, retailing for $59.99 list price, features the classic Nintendo NES controller many geeks have grown up with. The retro console comes pre-installed with 30 classic NES games including Super Mario Bros., Pac-Man, Metroid, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda and Kirby's Adventures. The NES Classic Edition system is a miniaturized version of the groundbreaking NES, originally released in 1985.

The Holiday shopping season 2016 has been dominated by the hunt for Hatchimals and the Nintendo NES classic edition. The NES Classic demand is still strong amidst ongoing shortage. The Best Buy NES Classic and Switch sale on March 29 was worse than a Black Friday sale. We don't expect the sitatution to improve in 2017. The NES Classic will be a hard to find item into the Holiday shopping season 2017.
