There is now official evidence that Apple works on autonomous cars.

It has been very quite in recent months about the Apple car project. Now out of nowhere there is proof that Apple is working on self-driving cars. The Cupertino based consumer electronics giant received a permit from the DMV that allows them to test self-driving cars on California roads.

The permit gives Apple the right to operate three 2015 Lexus RX450h SUVs equipped with hardware and software to be allow autonomous driving, according to Business Insider. Apple registered six drivers that monitor these cars.

The DMV has granted dozens of companies the rights to operate self-driving cars in California. The list includes VW, Mercedes, Google, Bosch, Tesla, BMW, GM, Ford, Baidu, Honda, Subaru and Faraday.

Apple does not test a full self-driving car. The company is only testing components of a self-driving car. It is still not clear what the end goal of Apple is in the car segment. It seems unlikely at this point that the company will suddenly compete with car makers with an Apple car. Apple has reportedly a thousand workers assigned to the Project Titan. The codename is hinting to something big.
