South Korean smartphone users do not need a battery pack.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 launches next week. South Korean consumers will get dramatically more battery life on their Samsung Galaxy S8, if they get it from KT. The carrier has deployed a new LTE technology that reduces the power usage of smartphones while connected. A Galaxy S8 can be used about 4 and a half hour longer on the KT network than on conventional LTE networks.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 has about 8 hours of battery life. On the C-DRX enabled LTE network the S8 battery life tops 12 hours.

The secret behind the batter life extension of about 45% is the C-DRX technology. The technology is transparently reducing the amount of communication during streaming. SK compares C-DRX to the idle stop-and-go technology found in cars.

C-DRX is a LTE standards set by the 3GPP. It took though SK two years to curb data loss and make C-DRX usable in the production environment. As the battery life extension is substantial, we expect other carriers around the globe to deploy C-DRX as well. Other Korean carriers have already began using C-DRX as well, according to a report on ET News (Korean).
