Amazon Sonic Mania Pre-Orders Pushed To September 4

The game previously held a tentative May 31 release date.

Customers who pre-ordered Sega's hotly anticipated new Sonic the Hedgehog game from Amazon.com felt a tinge of disappointment this week as they received notification that they will have to wait at least a few more months to get their fill of modern-day nostalgia.

Sega has not yet announced an official launch date. However, it has said that it will not be able to meet its previous target window of the first half of 2017.

In Amazon's notification to pre-order customers it says, "The release date for [Sonic Mania] has been changed by the publisher, and we want to provide you with a new delivery estimate based on the new release date."

The online retailer now gives an estimated launch date of September 4, though it's not clear how much of that is just a blind guess by Amazon and how much is based on specific info that it received from Sega.

Sonic Mania is a much-publicized throwback to the golden days of the blue hedgehog's commercial success -- trading in modern-day 3D graphics and mind-blowing physics engines, in exchange for an experience that looks and feels more like a 1990s Sega Genesis game.

It's being developed in part by Christian Whitehead, who gained cult fame after being widely praised for his involvement in the reimagined version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, complete with enhanced graphics and never-before-released levels. That throwback game was released for mobile devices, though Sonic Mania is headed only for consoles -- Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One -- as well as Windows PCs.

Although Sonic Mania is going back to the blue hedgehog's simple-graphics roots, Sega wants to reiterate that it also still believes in the character's foray into the modern gaming era. It will be releasing a game called Sonic Forces -- a high-intensity, limit-pushing 3D game, around the same time as Sonic Mania.
