iMac Pro is in the Works

There will be more than one 2017 iMac update, according to reports.

Boy, am I excited about the prospect of an iMac Pro. Apple is rumored to introduce an additional iMac for power users, possibly called iMac Pro. Apple is according to a report from the supply chain releasing a new 2017 iMac for consumers between August and October. The more exciting iMac Pro with "server-grade" performance is supposed to be released end of the year.

Rumors about a new iMac running on Intel Xeon E3-1285 v6 processor, 16-64GB ECC RAM, up to 2TB NVMe SSD, Thunderbolt 3, USB-C gen 2 and a powerful discrete graphics card have surfaced early April.

Apple itself officially confirmed that new iMacs are coming in 2017. Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller said at a meeting with journalists that the improved iMacs will appeal to a segment of Pro users, as well.

If Apple is going to redesign the 2017 iMac is not known yet. It is also not known if the iMac Pro will differ in design with the regular iMac. The 2017 iMac keyboard is likely going to feature the Touch bar, Apple introduced in the MacBook Pro last year.

There are also no reports about the screen-size of the iMac Pro. I hope there will be an option that is at least 30" or higher. The discrete graphics card will allow the iMac Pro drive Virtual Reality gear. This will finally end the need to use a Windows PC for using VR gear like the HTC Vive.

The iMac Pro will be expensive. Better start saving up now. It sure does not sit well with Apple that Microsoft has a more luxurious AIO PC on the market with the Surface Studio. I fully configured (64GB!) iMac Pro is likely to cost more than $5k. More iMac news.
