Instagram has reached over 700 million customers in its most recent growth spurt as an Internet phenomenon.

Instagram has nearly doubled its users to 700 million in the period since the last two years or so. This has been made possible thanks to Stories, web signup and a greater boarding on towards low-end Android smartphones.

Instagram’s growth spurt is such that it is quite phenomenal. Within just four months some 100 million users have been added to the already extant 600 million users on the platform.

Also within half a year’s time, the Internet phenomenon went from 500 million to 600 million. It was launched in 2010. Through the seven odd years since than, it has evolved to the point where it stands at 700 million users. Thus Instagram stands as a larger phenomenon than Twitter.

If this trend continues in its pace, soon it may be joining the billion mark firms such as Facebook,WhatsApp and Messenger, according to TechCrunch.

When the execs at the headquarters of Instagram were asked whether its Stories were helping the growth of the app, they replied in the affirmative. Instagram Stories reached the 200 million mark earlier in April, according to The Verge.

Instagram’s success has come at the cost of Snapchat’s failure. The latter sank by 82%. Everyone is looking at Snapchat’s future progress since it has taken a blow and no one knows if it will be able to pick itself up again off the ground.

The new niche markets have been a priority at Instagram. While the United States remains the main market, Brazil is at the second spot as a hub for Instagram.

Then there are other markets such as the UK and Japan not to mention Indonesia, India and Turkey. With such a large user base, Instagram has the power to have an influence on various famous brands.

Instagram sure has hit a milestone that signifies a major advancement of its image. The metric of monthly active users is a heuristic that has really kept track of Instagram’s followers.

Yet some say that this rule of thumb does not account for much in the way of nuance. The person who uses the service many times a day and one who only uses it once a month are obviously different types of individuals.

Also many users stop using the service only to return and then stop using it again only to never return. So it is all a pretty complex game of consumer mood swings if you look at it from a certain angle.
