There is a new blood test out now that can detect lung cancer a year before ordinary scans.

A team of scientists in the UK were able to see the first signs of cancer in the blood of patients while it was in the form of a small cluster of cells. These cells were invisible to X-rays or CT Scans. This sort of arrangement may allow medical researchers to pinpoint the tumor earlier than usual. Also the chances of a cure may be in sight. Even drugs are being manufactured that might counter the unstable DNA that causes cancer in the first place.

While this research took place regarding lung cancer, other types of cancer could be included in the mix. It is just that lung cancer kills more people than any other type of cancer.

The whole mission of the study was to discover how it could spread and destroy the lives of so many human beings. To see whether the cancer can recur, scientists needed to ask the right questions regarding the disease. Samples were taken from lung tumors upon their removal during surgery.

A genetic profile of each person’s cancer was built up via this method. Blood tests were taken continuously after every three months or so. It was noted down whether tiny traces of cancer began showing up or not in the bodies.

What was seen was that cancer recurrence could be detected a year before other methods detected it. The tumors were just 0.3 cubic millimeters when they showed up in the context of the blood tests.

Thus patients can be selected for treatment even if they showed no signs of lung cancer. This is thus a prophylactic sort of treatment, acording to BBC.

The combating of lung cancer after surgical procedures is what is at stake here. Since half of survivors of lung cancer relapse into the disease, such screening methods are crucial.

Besides thanks to this procedure, it will be easy to kill the cancer cells while they are so small as to be invisible to X-rays and CT Scans. It is hoped that by treating the disease when there is very little of it, the patients can be cured of it for a lifetime.

Getting lung cancer is a nightmare in itself. Yet a day may come in the future when thanks to this methodology, it will have gone the way of extinction like several infectious diseases did in the 20th century.

The findings of this study got published in the journal Nature.
