Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch is Fastest Selling in History

The new Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game for the Switch breaks sales record.

Nintendo launched Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch console on Friday. It was clear that this new game for the Switch will be huge, but its bigger than expected. With more than 459,000 combined packaged and digital sales in the U.S. on launch day alone (April 28), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch system is the fastest-selling game in the long-running Mario Kart series.

The previous record holder for the highest first-day sales in the franchise was Mario Kart Wii, with U.S. sales of approximately 433,900 when it launched in 2008. The solid sales numbers for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe equate to an attach rate of 45 percent – meaning nearly one in two Nintendo Switch owners in the U.S. purchased a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the first day it was available. To date, more than 2.7 million Nintendo Switch systems have been sold globally.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has also received more perfect review scores than any other Mario Kart game ever. With a current Metacritic score of 93, the critically acclaimed title is the highest-rated game in the series in 15 years – tying the overall review score of Mario Kart: Super Circuit for Game Boy Advance.

Amazon offers Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for 20% off to Prime members. Amazon Prime members only pay $47.99 for the game instead of $59.99.

To continue this strong momentum into the summer, a series of big games will launch for Nintendo Switch over the next few months, including Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition (May 11), Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers (May 26), ARMS (June 16) and Splatoon 2 (July 21).

The Nintendo Switch got restocked last week at most retailers in time for the Mario Kart launch. The Switch is sold out online again since Friday. Retail stores are the only option again. This morning Target and Walmart stores have been flagged by Nintendo Switch trackers to have stock.

The influx of new Nintendo Switch consoles has pushed down the reseller prices to around $370. A legit looking offer goes for $376.99 with free shipping on amazon.com.

The new Nintendo Switch launched on March 3 and as expected, the new console sold out on launch day. Nintendo announced on April 27 that the company sold 2.74 million Nintendo Switch consoles to date. The Japanese video game company is now fully back on track and forecasts to sell 10 million Switch consoles in the next 12 months.

The Nintendo Switch is a completely new video game concept. It's a mobile console first with removable small controllers. The mobile unit with display rests in a Nintendo Switch console connected to your TV.

The mobile unit slides inside the Switch docking station, where it also gets charged. The small controllers that are detachable from the mobile unit also slide onto a home controller.

The Nintendo Switch games sell for $59.99 like the games for the PS4 and Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch game line-up includes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo killed region locking on the Nintendo Switch. Any game sold in any region is playable on the Nintendo Switch.

The system includes the main console, Joy-Con (L) and Joy-Con (R) controllers, a Joy-Con grip (to which two Joy-Con are attached and used as one controller), a set of Joy-Con wrist straps, a Nintendo Switch dock (which holds the main console and connects it to a TV), an HDMI cable and an AC adapter. Two versions of the system are available: a version with a set of gray Joy-Con, and a version with one neon blue and one neon red Joy-Con. Read the lastest Nintendo Switch news.
