Every year, the best in theater is celebrated at the Tony Awards. The Tony Awards recognize and acknowledge the best of performance art on stage at Broadway and nominate the best among an array of performances and plays with the hope of winning the coveted Tony Award. This year’s Tony awards nominations have been announced and here are the five facts you need to know:

1. Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812
Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 has emerged as the most nominated play this year. With 12 nominations, including Josh Groban who made his Broadway debut in the lead role category; is an offbeat pop opera rendition of Tolstoy’s “War and Peace”.

2. Hello Dolly
One of the other big nominations of the night is Bette Midler starrer Hello Dolly. The play has received critical acclaim and no one can deny Middler’s stage presence as a meddlesome matchmaker. She is a definite shoo-in to win the Best Leading Actress in Musical category but her co-star David Hyde Pierce faces tough competition.

3. Dear Evan Hansen
Starring David Platt in the role that many believe made him earn a spot in the Time Top 100 Most Influential People. His role as a decompensating adolescent made an impact on everyone who made it to see the play. Young Mr. Platt is also a top contender in winning the coveted Tony Award in the Best Actor in a Musical category.

4. Four Playwrights Debut
For the first time in history perhaps, there are four American playwrights that debuted on the Broadway this year.
•    “Oslo,” by J.T. Rogers
•    “Sweat,” by Lynn Nottage
•    “A Doll’s House, Part 2,” by Lucas Hnath
•    “Indecent,” by the Pulitzer-winning playwright Paula Vogel

5.    Groundhog Day
The somewhat surprising play that seems to have snuck in the nomination list is the late entry, Groundhog Day. Based on the film starring Bill Murray. Andy Karl poses as the main competition for Platt in the respective Best Actor category.
The Tony Awards 2017 will take place at the Radio City Music Hall on June 11th. Kevin Spacey is set to host the festivities of the biggest night in theater.
