Scratch-resistant Sapphire edition of HTC U Ultra is as strong as HTC promised

HTC U Ultra seems to be the revival of HTC’s lost creativity. Along with all the cool features, HTC is now offering a HTC U Ultra edition which consists of a sapphire screen.

Sapphire is one of the hardest material that can be used for a smartphone’s screen, and is almost impervious to everyday scratches and blows. All this talk about glory raises one question, is HTC U Ultra Sapphire edition really as strong?

YouTube’s channel, JerryRigEverything placed a luxury Tissot wristwatch, a fifty dollar-worth glass protector for Samsung Galaxy S8, and an HTC U Ultra Sapphire edition under his famous scratch test, hoping to answer the question.

Zack, the founder of JerryRigEverything, performs his test such that he tries to scratch the surface of the device with tips of increasing hardness, the level of hardness where the surface shows scratches is where the test is concluded. These levels of hardness have been extracted from Mohs scale.

The glass protector failed the scratch test at the third level of hardness, objects like gold or silver will leave prominent scratches on the protector. Moreover, Zack tried the fire test on the screen protector also, the protector caught fire within seconds and was turned into plastic paste on the screen of Galaxy S8.

Tissot Watch and HTC U Ultra qualified to the next stages of the scratch test. Most of the devices including LG G6, iPhone 7, and Galaxy S8 give up when scratched with a level 6 or 7 hard material. Shockingly, the Luxury Watch by Tissot and HTC U Ultra’s screen were invulnerable till level 9 hard material.
