ExxonMobil Apple Watch App may be the Best Use of Mobile Payments

Pay for fuel at Exxon right on your Apple Watch

I lost my wallet once many years ago and I now obsessively pat my pocket to be sure it's still there to this day. I also once dropped a credit card and didn't realize it at a gas pump leading to a bit of angst each time I fill up. If you worry about digging out your wallet at the pump or just like the idea of being able to leave your credit card in your wallet, ExxonMobil has launched a new Speedpass+ iOS app that supports the Apple Watch reports MacRumors.

Exxon's Speedpass device links to your credit card and the idea for many years has been you simply wave a little device at the Exxon pump to pay without having to mess with your credit card. With the new iOS app on the Apple Watch all you need to do is navigate to the Speedpass+ app on your Apple Watch, select the pump you are at, authorize payment, and double-tap the side button to launch Apple Pay.

Once payment has been authorized the watch shows that you can start fueling up. It seems like it might take longer than simply digging out your credit card, but at least if you are the paranoid sort about losing something from your wallet you can skip those fears. The app also redeems Plenti loyalty points as well.

"With these updates to the Speedpass+ app, consumers now have even more options to pay for fuel while sitting in the comfort of their car – either using Ford SYNC 3 or the Apple Watch," said Matt Bergeron, vice president of marketing for ExxonMobil Fuels, Lubricants & Specialties Marketing Company.

"This is more than a cashless payment app; it is a platform that earns and redeems Plenti loyalty points and manages receipts. With ExxonMobil’s heritage and commitment to innovation, the Speedpass+ app continues to bring new benefits to its users."

The update for this app also works with the Ford Sync 3 system to let users authorize fuel payments using voice commands on the touchscreen in the car. It can also tell drivers how much fuel they have in the tank using the app when away from the car.
