Microsoft Unveils Emma Watch to Fight Parkinson's Tremors
  • Woman with Parkinsonian Symptoms can Write Again due to Prototype Watch

A woman with Parkinsonian symptoms can write again due to a prototype watch. She actually began crying out of sheer emotion when she was able to write down legible script despite her hand tremors.

Emma Lawton has Parkinson’s Disease. She recently received a tablet along with a watch from a female inventor named Haiyan Zhang who was also her friend.

As she wears the watch on her wrist she starts the brave task of writing down something on the tablet. Emma hasn’t been able to write since several years due to Parkinson’s Disease. Zhang cogitated on the matter a lot and came up with this device so that Emma could write again.

Her hand tremors were the reason why it was so difficult to write in a legible manner. Zhang is a Microsoft researcher. As Emma tried to write a few lines, she held her breath. It was a poignant moment.

Then she realized she was able to write again and she was absolutely jubilant about the whole thing. Zhang met Emma and they both struck up a friendship.

Zhang wanted to help Emma overcome her handicap. So she took up the project of using technology for ethically laudable goals. This project of technology for good holds a lot of promise for the future.

As a comparison of Emma’s writing without the watch and with it shows, it’s not perfect but it is much better. A world of difference lies between the illegible handwriting before putting on the watch and the legible writing that was the result afterwards.

The two, Emma and Zhang, who are best of friends, have decided that they will use technology to help others in myriad ways in the future. This is something which holds a lot of potential to change and transform lives.

The inventor Zhang named the prototype watch “Emma” in a dedication to her best friend whom she has helped with the innovative technology.

While the watch titled Emma is by no means a cure for the disease, it does manage the symptoms so that a patient with Parkinson’s can write legibly with its help.

The Emma watch is among a long list of cool technologies by Microsoft personnel. Zhang has certainly come up with a revolutionary device and her friend Emma will be grateful to Zhang for this gift which is truly a miracle that will last a lifetime.
