Youtube is filling up with videos of warping fidget spinners.

The viral fidget spinner trend is not losing steam. The controversies around this fidget toy is not stopping kids to spend time with their fidget spinners. The newest trend are warping spinners. These are not a new kind of fidget spinners, but a fun video effect. When filming a spinning fidget spinner it starts to wrap under the right conditions.

The simple way to make a fidget spinner work is to hold it against a bright light and record it spinning with 30 fps on your smartphone. The spinner starts to distort at the right spin frequencies. Changing the angle increases and decreases the distortion. At some frequencies the spinner appears to be standing still.

The effect has to do with the shutter speed. When the shutter speed is in exact sync with the spin frequency the spinner appears to stand still. Other ratios create the warping effect.

Kids are uploading tons of videos of warping fidget spinners. The screen grab above is from Youtube channel Kin3ticNation. Below is a video of Youtuber Pyrotron that features some high quality scenes of warping spinners. This kind of fidget spinner shape results for instance in weird warping shapes. The fidget spinners are the most popular toys on amazon. Almost all of the top 100 most sold toys are fidget spinner.
