The 49-foot mysterious dead creature could be some sort of baleen whale.

A strange, massive sea creature washed up dead on an Indonesian beach and is oozing fluid, making the surrounding water bloody red.

Images and footage recently taken on the beach show a badly decomposed animal-like object roughly 49 feet long and around 22 feet wide. It is believed to have been dead for at least three days before it was spotted by a local resident from Seram Island on Tuesday. The man initially mistook the giant creature for a boat.

Locals are puzzled over the mysterious creature and have been questioning what it is. Some speculate that it could be a giant squid but experts suggest otherwise. They say it is probably the carcass of a baleen whale.

“Giant squid are invertebrates and there are clearly bones visible (jaw, skull, vertebrate) so I am very comfortable saying it’s some type of rorqual whale.” Regina Asmutis-Silvia, executive director of Whale and Dolphin Conservation told Huffington Post.

“Certain species of baleen whales (rorquals) have ‘ventral grooves’ which run from their chin to their belly button. It is stretchy tissue that expands when they feed.”

George Leonard, chief scientist at Ocean Conservancy says. “Trying to identify huge ocean creatures half a (world) away from a grainy video is tough to do; but once people start sharing specific information that begins to narrow in on defining characteristics of the creature, the identity begins to come into focus.”

The creature is in the later stages of decomposition, which is making it difficult to identify. While it is hard to determine the cause of the death in animal in such a bad condition, the dead animals can come to shore for a number of reasons. But in this case, experts suggest that tides or strong currents likely brought it to the shore.

Turning up of mysterious creatures like these on shores is no longer a rarity. Earlier this year, a hairy creature was washed ashore in Philippines and generated a plenty of buzz on social media.

Since the decomposed creature is releasing fluid and turning the water around it red, it could be hazardous for human health and can carry the risk of diseases. According to Jakarta Globe, residents have asked the government to help them remove the animals and safely dispose of its remains.
