  • World's Remotest Henderson Island in Pacific Region is Covered with 37.7 Million Plastic Bits and Pieces

An isolated island in the Pacific region is reportedly covered with 37 million plastic bits and pieces of rubbish.

A remote island in the South Pacific is strewn with millions of pieces of plastic. It is a right mess and no one has thought of cleaning it up.

The UK’s Pitcairn Islands group has approximately 37.7 million fragments of man-made detritus on its beaches. This piece of land surrounded by water is in the midst of a current that allows boats carrying stuff from South America to deposit their refuse on its surface.

The scientists looking into the matter are hopeful that something will be done about all this land pollution. This garbage dump had 671 objects per square meter and these small pieces together weighed at least 17 tonnes.

As BBC reported, to claim that these items are disposable or of only one-time use value would be incorrect. The study looked into how this island was a garbage dump for all the flotsam and jetsam from around the global village.

Among some of the solid objects were toothbrushes, lighters and razor blades. Many animals such as crabs on the island are finding shelter inside these objects. This may seem to be a source of amusement for many but in fact it is a sad tale.

Much of the plastic has sharp edges and is poisonous to boot. It is also very flimsy in its structure as most polymers are for that matter. A great number of hats of various shapes and sizes were also seen among the stuff on the island.

According to Popular Science strangely the island is not inhabited by any humans. Yet the island seems to be a trash and refuse magnet. This is indeed a paradox.

It is just that mankind has wreaked so much havoc on the environment by making ten thousand articles of use from plastic. These are hardly biodegradable.

They take forever to decompose. Thus they serve as a toxic reminder of our wayward ways. The fact of the matter is that humanity creates the same amount of plastic as is to be found on this island every two seconds. Such is our rate of pollution.

As Fox News says it so well, while these plastic pieces may seem like a colorful picture to many, it is actually very cheap and sick and the litter ought to be jettisoned from the island as soon as possible.

We need a moratorium on this matter since it is a shame and an affront to the pristine quality that Mother Nature otherwise possesses in scads.

This study got published in the US scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
