iPad Sales Decline Laid at the Feet of iPad mini

Ditching the iPad mini could make the iPad category look better overall

We mentioned earlier this morning that the iPad mini might be discontinued. The reason for that discontinuation was originally listed as a generic poor sales rationality. The Motley Fool has a report that sheds a bit more light on why the iPad mini is expected to get the axe. We all know that sales of the iPad line overall have declined recently and that overall sales in the tablet market as a whole are on the decline.

According to The Motley Fool, Apple has indicated that the overall iPad sales decline is due in large part to tepid desire for the iPad mini on the market. Citing an unnamed source, the report claims that while iPad shipments dropped 13% year over year during the last quarter for Apple and revenue declined by 12%, there was apparently growth in some iPad size segments.

Specifically Apple CFO Luca Maestri said Apple has seen growth in tablets, "iPad growth in the U.S. during the March quarter and revenue growth worldwide for [Apple's] 9.7-inch and larger iPads over the last four quarters."

What that means is that the declines Apple has seen in iPad shipments are mostly due to the iPad mini selling poorly. If that product was no longer in the lineup, the implication is that iPad sales numbers could look much better than they do now. Discontinuing the iPad mini would also allow Apple to reallocate important engineering and other talent that currently focuses on that device to other better selling and more interesting devices.

The Motley Fool also expects that simplifying the iPad mini product line to a single device at a $399 price point with 128GB of storage will accelerate the decline in demand for the device, further hurting the iPad business overall. Simply discontinuing that device could stabilize sales or possibly show an improvement. The good news here is that if the iPad mini is discontinued, people on the fence about buying one should be able to get one at a discount as they are closed out.
