Tom Hardy officially joins the cast of “Venom,” a Spider-Man's offshoot, Sony Pictures announced on Twitter Friday.

The Oscar-nominated actor will star as the anti-hero Venom - a character that has made its first big screen appearance in 2007 “Spider-Man 3.” The character was then played by actor Topher Grace. “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer is also in the final negotiations to helm the movie. The spin-off is set to release in October 5, 2018.

This is not the first that Tom Hardy is playing a supervillain in a movie. He has portrayed Bane – a supervillain with intelligence and great physical strength – in the 2012 movie “The Dark Night Rises.” But this time around, he will be the central character in the movie.

The Hollywood Reporter describes Venom as “one of Marvel’s top villains and a Spider-Man fixture since he was introduced in 1988.” The character is created by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck. Venom is an alien symbiote that needs a human host for its survival. Once it bonds with the host, the character gives it incredible powers.Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner wrote the script for Venom.

While Tom Hardy will play Eddie Brock, the character who first became Venom in the upcoming movie, the production and details of plot are being kept secret at this time.

According to reports, some other characters like longtime Spider-Man ally the Silver Sable also gets a movie.
