  • Leak Reveals Peculiar Facebook Content Moderation Rules

Apparently, Facebook’s inner policies regarding, among other topics, sex, terrorism and violence have been divulged recently in a leak.

Facebook’s rule book on what its more than two billion users can post on their account pages was revealed recently. This has sparked up a debate about some of the giant online social media site’s standards regarding certain delicate and controversial topics.

The Guardian revealed the allegedly leaked Facebook rules on Sunday. Facebook uses certain heuristics to moderate such issues as aggression, hatred, terrorism, pornography, racist attitudes and self-abuse.

Among the rules and regulations there even exist several on such extreme topics as cannibalism. Some of the documents that have been leaked online show that the giant company is under pressure in Europe and the USA for its internal standards.

Revenge porn is just one such topic that has caught the attention of everyone. It seems that Facebook is getting rather unwieldy as time moves on. It is furthermore having a difficult time controlling some of its content.

There are so many fake accounts on Facebook. The removal of hate speech and violent content that is not politically correct is the goal of Facebook yet it is not doing such a good job regarding its main objective.

Among some of the guidelines are a few strange anomalies. The phrase “Someone shoot Trump” is not allowed while using other hate speech is tolerated. Violent death videos have not been censored except in extreme cases.

Punishment of children and their bullying are often not deleted which is sad to say the least in a civilized world. Cruelty to animals is often shared on Facebook. Handmade pornography is allowed while digital pornography is not allowed.

Abortion without nudity is allowed to be seen. Many of these guidelines reek of hypocrisy and double standards. It seems so many things which should not be tolerated are tolerated and many which should be condoned are not condoned.

Especially the portrayal of self harm is often allowed on Facebook which is a shame. The alibi given is that these people are in distress and ought to be allowed to vent their frustrations out on themselves.

This makes a mockery of the law’s function of stepping in when a person becomes a source of danger to self or society. It is a strange and contradictory compendium of rules and by-laws that is Facebook.

According to CNet, the CEO of Facebook is looking into this moral glitch in the system and wants to take on the services of over 3000 skilled personnel who will remove some of the sick garbage that has ended up on several account pages of Facebook.

Video clips showing murder and suicide are obviously not a good thing. They ought to be deleted as soon as possible. Moreover, the people on Facebook have also got to be kept safe from many psychopaths and sociopaths who seek to do them harm.

According to Recode, you have to draw the line somewhere and it often has to do with putting your foot down at the point of no return where the freedom to do something would cause potential damage to life or limb.
