Apple Micro-LED Dispaly Trial Production Tipped for Late 2017

Late 2017 micro-LED production likely means Apple Watch Series 3 with OLED screen

Rumors have been circulating for awhile now that Apple was working on some very cool new screen tech that will one day find its way into the Apple Watch. Early rumors indicated that the tech, micro-LED screens, might be ready to be installed into the Apple Watch Series 3 when it launches later this year.

Rumors have suggested that the micro-LED screen Apple Watch 3 would land sometime this fall alongside the iPhone 8. A new rumor floating around today suggests that Apple is only aiming for trial production of micro-LED screens by the end of 2017. If this rumor is true then one of two things is happening with the Apple Watch Series 3.

If it launches this fall, it will not have the micro-LED display. If it will have a micro-LED display, then the Apple Watch Series 3 won't launch this year at all. If trial production is only starting at the end of 2017, it will be months before full production is underway and then more months before the Apple Watch 3 is ready to ship. I'd wager that means an Apple Watch with a micro-LED screen won't land until the middle of 2018.

MacRumors says that the rumor has started with industry sources who state Apple will only make a small volume of devices with micro-LED screens towards the end of this year. Perhaps we will see a special edition of the Apple Watch 3 using that screen later this year, but I rather doubt that. Apple is expected to build its micro-LED screens in Taoyuan, Taiwan.

The report read in part, "A few makers engaged in R&D for micro LED display products, despite many technological bottlenecks, are expected to take the initiative to begin trial production in the second half of 2017 at the earliest, according to industry sources.

Apple has been keen in the development of micro-LED technology following its acquisition of LuxVue in 2014, and recent market speculations also indicate that Apple is likely to crank out a small volume of micro LED display products from its plant in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan at the end of the year."

If the Apple Watch Series 3 launches this year, it will continue to use the OLED screen it has now most likely. This would mean that the updates to the Watch would be limited to LTE connectivity and the long rumored smart bands.
